Starport Poker

No-Limit Texas Hold'em in the starport casino of the Grok Trek universe. Take on the house AIs, or sit with real players online.

Play credits only

Starport Poker uses play credits only. It is never real money. Credits cannot be bought, sold, cashed out or exchanged for anything. They exist only to keep score. Everyone starts with 10,000 credits. If you drop below 2,000 credits you can take a free refill (back up to 5,000), once per day.

How to play

  1. Pick Vs Computer or Online at the top.
  2. Against the computer: type your name, choose 2 to 6 seats, the AI level (Rookie, Pilot, Ace or Admiral) and the stakes, then press Deal me in. Each house pilot gets a style: tight, loose, aggressive or solid.
  3. The AI levels: Rookie plays loosely, calls too much and rarely bluffs. Pilot knows its starting hands and bets its good ones. Ace plays by position, raises and re-raises before the flop, follows through on its raises and bluffs with draws. Admiral does all that with sharper reads and bet sizes, sets traps with big hands, and bluffs more often, but never with nothing in a crowded pot. Online, each house bot plays at Pilot, Ace or Admiral strength.
  4. Online: type your name and press Join online (the same name and key as Grok Chess online). Pick a table in the lobby, choose a buy-in and press Sit. When few people are around, house bots fill the empty seats.
  5. On your turn use Fold, Check/Call or Bet/Raise. Set the size with the slider or the Min, ½ Pot, Pot and All-in buttons.
  6. There is no undo. Your computer table is saved after every action, so you can reload or close the tab and carry on later. Online seats keep playing on the server.

Rules in short

Each player gets two hole cards. The two players after the dealer button post the small and big blinds (heads-up, the button posts the small blind). Betting rounds come pre-flop, after the flop (three cards), the turn and the river. The best five-card hand from your two cards plus the five on the board wins. A raise must be at least the size of the last bet or raise. A short all-in that is less than a full raise does not reopen the betting. When someone is all-in, extra bets go into side pots that only the players who matched them can win. Tied hands split the pot.

Hand ranks, best first: straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, pair, high card. The ace can be low in the A-2-3-4-5 straight (the wheel).

Fair online play

Online tables run on the server. It shuffles with a secure random generator, deals the cards, enforces turn order, blinds, minimum raises, all-ins and side pots, and never sends other players' hole cards to your browser until a showdown. You have 25 seconds per turn. After that the server checks for you if it can, or folds. Players who time out twice are sat out. Leaving folds your current hand and returns your stack to your credits.

Leaderboards and chat

The Scores tab shows the best online bankrolls and the biggest pots won. Grok Chat sits in the corner: press it to talk to other players.
