Grok Doomsday
An original first-person action shooter in the spirit of the classic 1990s corridor shooters. The starport has been overrun by alien invaders: fight through eight maps, from the gentle Docking Bay to the Warden's Spire, and take down the Doom Warden.
How to play
- Type a name and press Register once if you want your scores on the leaderboard. Without a name you play practice games.
- Pick Explore or Action in Choices, then press Start game (or Enter, or tap the view).
- Move with W A S D or the arrows, fire with Space (or the left mouse button), and press E to open doors and search walls. Click the view to turn with the mouse; Esc lets go of it.
- Find the keycards for the red, blue and yellow doors, then step on the glowing green exit lift to reach the next map.
Explore and Action
- Explore is a maze crawl: fewer and slower invaders that hit softer, so you can hunt for keycards, secrets and every corner of the automap.
- Action is fast and loud: far more invaders at full speed, more barrels, and you start with the Scatter Gun and Rapid Repeater, with heavier weapons turning up early.
- Map 1 is very gentle in both modes: a small map, a few slow invaders and plenty of health. Each map is a little bigger and busier than the last.
Episode 2: The Orbital Foundry
Pick Episode 2 in Choices to start a second, harder campaign of four maps: Foundry Gate, Smelter Lines, Cryo Vaults and The Hive Crucible, where the Doom Warden waits again. You start with the Scatter Gun (Action mode adds the Rapid Repeater). Watch for the new Splitter: a slow, tough twin-cored blob that bursts into two Skitters when it falls. Episode 2 scores are verified the same way and share the same boards; the Map column shows how far into the episode you got.
Level editor
The Level editor lets you paint walls, doors, keycard doors, secrets and the exit lift, then place invaders, pick-ups, barrels and your start. Levels are saved in your browser, and Share code gives a code and a link anyone can play. Custom levels are practice only, so they never post to the high score boards.
The arsenal
- Blaster: your trusty sidearm, never runs dry.
- Scatter Gun: seven pellets per shot, brutal up close. Uses shells.
- Rapid Repeater: a stream of bolts. Uses cells.
- Rocket Launcher: explosive rockets. Keep your distance from the blast!
- Grok Cannon: a huge green orb that clears a room. Uses 40 cells a shot.
The invaders
- Skitter: a fast clawed crawler that rushes you.
- Gunner: an armoured trooper that shoots from range and sometimes drops a cell pack.
- Wisp: a floating jelly that spits plasma.
- Brute: a hulking bruiser with fiery fists and fireballs.
- The Doom Warden: the overlord at the top of the Warden's Spire. Beat it to open the final lift.
Pick-ups, barrels and secrets
- Stims and medkits heal, armor vests soak up a third of the damage, and the Grok orb overcharges you to 200.
- Green barrels explode when shot, hurting everything nearby, including you.
- Some walls have a faint seam: press Use on them to open a secret closet with a star crystal (+500) and a goody.
- Rooms have their own lighting, from flickering dark corridors to bright halls. Tab or M opens the automap of everywhere you have seen; a minimap sits in the corner.
- The face in the middle of the status bar is you: it winces when hit, grits its teeth when firing and grins at a new weapon.
Lives and scoring
- You have 3 lives. Lose one and you start the map again from its start with your weapons. A game ends after 75 minutes of play.
- Points for every invader, pick-up, keycard and secret, plus a map bonus (1000 per map, a time bonus, and 500 each for clearing every invader or finding every secret). Saving the starport adds 20000 plus 2000 per life left.
Fair scores
When you play under a registered name, the server picks the random seed that builds your maps, and the page records only your inputs and when (mouse turns are recorded too). When the game ends the server replays that record on its own copy (whole-number maths, so both give exactly the same result) and posts the score it gets. A score can't be typed in or edited, and each game can be posted once.
Autosave
If you close or reload the page in the middle of a game, it comes back paused exactly where you left it.
Leaderboards and chat
The High scores tab shows each player's best verified score and the map reached, and Overall shows the site-wide totals. Grok Chat pops up from the corner. Use Share on X at the top to tell your friends.
All names, maps, art and sounds are original, drawn and synthesized in code for this game, with no outside libraries.
