Grok Chess
Full-rules chess against Grok at five levels from Cadet to Grandmaster, or challenge real players online with ratings and clocks.
Intro
Every rule of chess is here: castling, en passant, promotion, check, checkmate and stalemate, plus the draws by threefold repetition, the 50-move rule and insufficient material. Grok thinks in a background worker, so the page never freezes while it plans.
How to play
- Pick Vs Computer or Online at the top.
- Against the computer: type your name, choose Grok's level and your colour (White, Black or Random) and press Start game.
- Click one of your pieces, then click one of the highlighted squares. Dots are quiet moves and rings are captures. When a pawn reaches the last rank a picker asks which piece it becomes.
- There are no takebacks. Your game is saved after every move, so you can close the tab and carry on later.
| Level | How Grok plays | Score weight |
|---|---|---|
| Cadet | looks one move ahead and plays loosely | ×1 |
| Pilot | looks two moves ahead, with a little randomness | ×2 |
| Captain | looks three moves ahead | ×4 |
| Admiral | searches deeper for about two seconds, never random | ×7 |
| Grandmaster | its deepest search, about three and a half seconds a move | ×10 |
Playing real people
Open the Online tab and pick a name. Your name is protected by a key that stays in your browser, so nobody else can play as you. Then post an open challenge, challenge someone who is online, or accept a challenge. Choose your colour and a clock: no clock (take your time, even days), 10+0 or 5+3 (five minutes plus three seconds a move). The server checks every move and keeps the clocks, so nobody can cheat the rules or the time. You can resign or offer a draw. Online games change your rating (everyone starts at 1200).
Scoring
A win against Grok scores the level's weight times 100, plus a speed bonus of the weight for every move under 60. A Captain win in 30 moves is 4 × (100 + 30) = 520. An online win scores 150 plus half of how far your opponent's rating is above 1000. The leaderboard keeps your best result.
Leaderboards and chat
The Scores tab shows the best wins, the online ratings and the site-wide totals. Grok Chat sits in the corner: press it to talk to other players. Use Share on X at the top to tell your friends.
